The Sin Hing Foods Story

Our Story

Sin Hing Foods is a company with deep roots and a rich history that began in the early 1990s.

Our story is one of vision, perseverance, and dedication, all sparked by our founder, Shu Shen Fu. After immigrating to New Zealand, Grandpa Shu Shen was surprised by the limited availability and high prices of bean sprouts. Determined to make these nutritious and affordable vegetables accessible to the migrant community, he embarked on a journey that would shape our company’s future.

Shu Shen Fu returned to China to master the art of bean sprout cultivation and then set up a small growing operation in the backyard of a property in Manurewa, using old domestic fridges as makeshift growing rooms. His initial efforts caught the attention of local green grocers and key players like Lim Chhour Supermarket and Vege World. The demand for his bean sprouts quickly outstripped supply.

With the support of his sons, Guo Hua Fu and the late Guo Liang Fu, Shu Shen Fu faced significant challenges in securing a suitable facility. Despite financial constraints and skepticism from family, they succeeded in purchasing a property at 5c Lorien Place, East Tamaki, through vendor finance. For over a decade, the bean sprouts were hand-watered every three hours until Ian Stevenson, a neighbouring engineer, helped design and install our first automatic watering machine.

The next 20 years saw steady organic growth and increasing demand within the Asian community. In 2014, Shu Shen Fu’s grandchildren, Hong Fu, Sammy Fu, and Jade Fu, joined the business, bringing fresh ideas and expanding our market reach. Their efforts led to our first major challenge in 2015, when demand exceeded our capacity of 12,000 kilograms per week. This spurred our move to a custom-designed facility in Huntly in 2017, where we continue to master the art of bean sprout cultivation.

Our Mission

Provide high-quality, affordable bean sprouts that promote healthy eating and set industry standards for quality and food safety.

Our Commitment

We actively support our community through regular donations to food banks, healthcare organisations, and international disaster relief efforts.

Our Future

We aim to make bean sprouts available throughout NZ by expanding our partnerships with major supermarket chains.

New Zealand’s largest mung bean sprout grower

Today, Sin Hing Foods is the largest mung bean sprout grower in New Zealand, with a state-of-the-art facility capable of producing 40,000 kilograms or 200,000 bags of 200-gram bean sprouts weekly.

Our mission remains clear: to provide high-quality, affordable bean sprouts that promote healthy eating and set industry standards for quality and food safety.

As we expand our reach across New Zealand, we aim to make fresh, affordable bean sprouts accessible to everyone. Our commitment extends beyond business; we actively contribute to our community through donations to food banks, church organizations, and causes such as Totara Hospice and St. John’s Ambulance. Recently, we contributed $10,000 to provide aid to victims of Typhoon Mojie which made landfall on the 6th September in Hainan Island, China. The Typhoon caused billions of dollars of damage and ruined many peoples houses and destroyed livelihoods. As our family is from this region in China and with our deep connection to our heritage, it was a natural instinct to help in any way we could.

We are eager to partner with Foodstuffs and continue our growth journey. Although we do not yet have a vendor number with Foodstuffs, a friend has successfully sold our bean sprouts to Pak’n Save Wairau, where we are moving 1400 bags of 500g mung bean sprouts per week. Given the exceptional results at this busy store, we are confident that this positive trend will continue throughout all Foodstuffs stores if given the opportunity. Gilmours, a Foodstuffs brand, has also expressed interest in our products, further underscoring the growing recognition of our quality. We look forward to the opportunity to expand our presence and impact with Foodstuffs.

Thank you for being part of the Sin Hing Foods story. Together, we can make a difference in both the marketplace and our communities.
